LOLA: From a 1988 Kafeneio to a Modern Seafood Hangout

Three Decades of Hospitality

When LOLA opened in 1988, it was a no-frills kafeneio (traditional Greek café) where hospitality and good company were what mattered. A few years later it became an ouzeri, a casual spot serving ouzo with small plates, while keeping everything that had defined it from the start. The change did not go against the spirit of the place. It simply added a stronger focus on food.

Today the space blends nostalgia with modern touches. Simplicity and elegance dominate, while island-style details create a relaxed, summery mood. Here, the table is never rushed, and the dining experience always comes first.

Starters and Salads with a Taste of the Sea

The kitchen relies on carefully chosen ingredients and well-balanced flavors. Among the starters, you’ll find lakerda(cured bonito), marinated anchovies with a light tang, taramosalata (fish roe dip) with a velvety texture, and xidato htapodaki (octopus in vinegar), where the acidity meets a touch of sweetness. The grilled sardines with lemon and olive oil, and the lightly sautéed crayfish, let the natural taste of the ingredients speak for itself.

The salads follow the same approach. Boiled greens with good olive oil, a summer-scented tomato salad, and dishes with kritamo (rock samphire) or paximadi (barley rusk) bring freshness to the table. The carefully made dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves) add a more traditional touch.

Main Courses: Where the Creativity Shows

In the main dishes, the kitchen shows its inventiveness more clearly. Highlights include the kritharoto (orzo cooked like risotto) with shrimp, which keeps just the right texture and depth of flavor, linguine with mussels in a seafood broth sauce, and gnocchi with shrimp and aromatic herbs. The seafood paella, scented with saffron, brings the Mediterranean to your plate, while steamed mussels remain a simple, clean choice.

The menu is rounded out by grilled squid, shrimp saganaki (baked in tomato sauce with feta), and fillets of fresh fish, cooked with respect for their quality. What they all share is an effort to keep the authentic flavor intact, without any fuss.

Ouzo and Tsipouro with Your Meal

The drinks are more than just an accompaniment. The spirits list is carefully put together, featuring well-known labels as well as small producers. Ouzo and tsipouro (a Greek grape spirit) are there to bring out the aromas of the dishes and keep the table in balance.

The approach is not a formality but a real one: each pairing serves the food rather than overshadowing it. In this way, the glass becomes part of the story LOLA tells.

A Choice That Stands the Test of Time

From 1988 to today, LOLA has evolved without losing its identity. Consistent quality and devotion to flavor have made it a lasting favorite. It doesn’t chase attention-grabbing tricks, but focuses on detail and substance.

It is a place that shows good cooking is built on balance. With respect for the ingredients and a creative spirit, it combines tradition and modern gastronomy in a completely natural way.
